PAOLA MARESCA The garden not only reflects the imprints and trends of the times in which it was created, but also the ideas and thoughts of its creator. A subtle red thread indeed binds the gardens, whose forms, adapting to different ideologies and trends, over time maintain in their intimate essence a close connection with that heritage of archetypes and symbols through which the language of the soul is expressed. Thus, nature, tamed within the space of a garden, becomes an evocative instrument and at the same time a means to transmit ancient and profound truths. Since its origins, the garden has always been the quintessential sacred locus of vast symbolism. In the garden, where the cosmos reflects in the microcosm, the epiphany of the divine is celebrated. The sacred sentiment of nature has, since the most remote antiquity, become a tool for self-revelation.

The Renaissance and Mannerist hermetic language transform the garden into a sort of theater of memory where the ritual of mystery is celebrated. Not coincidentally, alchemical practice turns to the natural iconographic and symbolic repertoire to illustrate the secret paths of the Great Work. The alchemist translates the harmony of nature and its secret rhythms into experience to give full reality to the metaphor. With the first echoes of Romanticism, the garden undergoes transformation once again. Initiatory itineraries carve the traces of paths dotted with structures alluding to other, lost sacredness. In essence, in the garden, the hidden sanctuary of secrecy, fascinations and cross-references intertwine with that system of myths and symbols that form the framework of our psyche, where the soul soars towards the luminous abysses of being.
